NicAlert™
How to use NicAlert™ to determine the amount of cotinine present in saliva:
1. Place the funnel in the container and fill it with saliva until it is up to a third full.
2. Dispose of the funnel and seal the container tightly with the cap supplied.
3. Remove the NicAlert™ test strip from its foil wrapper (check the expiry date) and place the strip on a flat, non-absorbent surface.
4. . Squeeze the container to place eight drops of saliva onto the lower (white) end A of the test strip (the blue part is at the top).
| If the blue part of the strip C at the top end fails to turn white, or if small red stains B appear in measuring zones 0 - 6, please call the health4u AG NicAlert Helpline on +41 41 752 11 33 |
5. After a waiting period of 20 minutes, the blue section C at the top end of the NicAlert™ test strip turns white, and pinkish-red stains B appear in measuring zones 0 to 6.

Interpreting the results:
The cotinine content of the saliva corresponds to the bottom-most strip with red colouration (several sections may be stained red).
Level 0 corresponds to the amount of cotinine present in the saliva of a non-smoker. If the bottom-most red stain corresponds to level 1 (10 - 30 ng/ml in saliva) and above, this can indicate a passive smoking hazard, or the active-smoker status of the person tested.

| How to use NicAlert™ to determine the amount of cotinine present in urine: |
1. Collect the urine in a clean, disposable sample container.
2. Hold the NicAlert strip at the top and dip the soft, white bottom end A into the urine sample. Do not immerse the strip into the urine beyond point A (marked "Sample").
3. Keep the NicAlert strip immersed in the urine for 20 seconds.
4. Place the strip on a non-absorbent surface and leave it to stand for 10 to 15 minutes.

Level 0 corresponds to the amount of cotinine present in the urine of a non-smoker.
If the bottom-most red stain corresponds to levels 1 to 2, this indicates a probable non-smoker or passive smoker.
If the bottom-most red stain corresponds to level 3 (100 - 200 ng/ml of urine) and above, it can be assumed that the person tested is either a smoker or is exposed to high levels of passive smoke.
